Tarkine Forest Adventures at Dismal Swamp is located in one of the least developed areas of Tasmania. Home to some of the world’s most unique flora and fauna, the largest sinkhole in the southern hemisphere is a beautiful place to spend the day with family and friends. The attraction was built in 2004. It was run by Forestry Tasmania for 6 years. It has been privately operated for 9 years.
The sinkhole, itself, is 624 hectares in area and 40 metres deep. It was formed over hundreds of thousands of years as acidic runoff from the volcanic soils leached into and dissolved the soft dolomite sediments that underlay most of the region. While natural environments continue to change, the sinkhole itself will not get much deeper due to the layer of marine sediments that lie 1.5 to 3 metres below the swamp’s surface.
In the 1960s and 70s, there were plans to log the swamp area and drain it for agricultural use. A man named Wes Beckett, who was an experienced forester believed that Dismal Swamp should be preserved. After a long campaign, Wes was successful and gained reserve status for 310 hectares of Dismal Swamp.
Forestry closed the site in april 2010 and it was consequently re-opened as a private operation in September 2010 and has been run by the current operators since then. In 2004, a move was made by the Tasmanian government to create “attractions” away from the accepted tourist routes, and Dismal Swamp was identified as having the values and natural beauty that would make it a good choice. Forestry Tasmania were requested to develop an attraction that would showcase the unique qualities of the region and bring an opportunity to people to experience it. In September 2010, we re-opened and have continued maintaining this wonderful site to the current day.
